I recently had the pleasure of visiting the Nassau County Museum of Art. The museum is located at One Museum Drive in Roslyn Harbor 11756. What an amazing place in the middle of Long Island. The grounds are huge. They have walkways with sculptures, trails with beautiful flowers and of course the art exhibits which change every few months. In addition to the wonderful sites, the museum has educational programs for children and adults.
Currently on display is the “New York, New York” exhibit. The paintings, sculptures, and other artworks are really cool. Some of the well-known artists that have works at the museum include John Sloan, Reginald Marsh, Georgia O’Keeffe, Childe Hassam, Milton Avery, Mark Rothko, Robert Henri, and many more. New York City has so much interesting history and the Nassau County museum does an amazing job displaying a great deal of that history through its exhibits. The best thing about the New York, New York exhibit is that you get to see what Manhattan looked like in the early part of the 20th century.
The oil painting of “Lower Manhattan” by Childe Hassam is one of my favorites pieces and the sculpture of “The Sword Swallower” by Red Grooms is really interesting as well. Artwork featuring New York City parades, bridges, subways, stores, bars, restaurants and much more will be on view at the museum. The gift shop will also be selling New York City-themed items along with other art-themed merchandise.
In addition to “New York, New York” there’s another exhibit called “Glamour Icons: Marc Rosen”. Marc Rosen is the package designer for many commercial fragrances and cosmetics. Marc has designs in the Museum of Modern Art in New York City and the Musée de la Mode in Paris, France.
Marc also has been recognized with seven FiFi awards, which is one of the highest honors you can get in the fashion world. He treats fragrance packaging as art that customers would buy for the beautiful packaging, not just for what is inside the package. During his 40-year career he has influenced numerous major fashion designers and companies including Revlon, Estée Lauder, Nina Ricci, Perry Ellis, Avon, Victoria Secret, Karl Lagerfeld, Oscar de la Renta and so many more.
I had the pleasure of meeting Marc at the museum on one of the opening days of the exhibit. He was a true gentleman and very down to earth for someone as accomplished as he is. His book, “Glamour Icons: Perfume Bottle Design” is on sale at the museum store.
Both exhibits will be shown until early November. You should definitely make time to stop by before the exhibits are over. The Nassau County Museum of Art is a hidden gem that should be visited by all. It will be a lot of fun for the entire family.
